A thunderous start, and a thrilling finish at Sandburn Hall

Thunder and lightning produced a dramatic drive north of York to Sandburn Hall, and created a nervous build up with everyone praying it cleared before our first tee time. Luckily the clouds parted and glorious sunshine greeted us, leaving it to Charlie Langdale to take the course by storm.

Sandburn is developing fast and the front nine provides generous fairways for players to get into their stride before tackling the tougher back nine.

Half term had affected the turnout but we still had good numbers and the competition was fierce. Tobias Duczenko, Charlie Langdale and James Pierechod all stated well, trying to establish a big lead. Despite some impressive scoring, as one player hit the top, they would quickly give away their advantage. This trend continuee throughout the round.

The first nearest the pin on the 6th was won by Lucy Foster, as she showed everyone how it was done with a great approach to around 10 foot. The green on the 6th is tricky, protected by water across the front, so it was a great effort.

As the round developed, Tobias dropped away slightly and was replaced by last year’s Order of Merit runner up, Michael Goodare. Charlie threatened to pull away with a superb eagle on the 12th but the pack kept in touch, with James Pierechod playing some very consistent golf.

The scene was set on the 18th, with the second nearest the pin, in front of the expectant crowd in the clubhouse. Unfortunately, the crowds were not to be impressed, as group after group failed to hit the target. It was left to the final group to take the honours, with Charlie Langdale collecting the prize with ease.

This also secured him his spot at the top of the leaderboard with 35 points, giving a one shot lead from James Pierechod in second.
