Huddersfield Golf Club: Fiery fairways and punishing rough!
The magnificent setting of Huddersfield Golf Club greeted Clubhouse Leaders for our 5th event of the season. After the rain of Otley in was business as usual with glorious sunshine the order of the day.
After a warm welcome we took to the course, with the pack jostling for extra points towards the Order of Merit.
The course was in fiery condition, with punishing rough. The green keepers had kept the greens slightly longer to protect them from burning out and so they were deceptively slow. These combinations meant that scoring was tough, with only two players in the field breaking par.
Ryan Scott was an early contender in the round and he also put down the marker for nearest the pin on the 8th with a great shot. Despite being in the first group out, this proved good enough to take the prize.
At the halfway stage there were still a number of players in contention and one wayward drive could change the leaderboard at any time. As the back nine developed, it started to become a shootout between Ryan, James Pierechod, James Skirrow and the ‘in form’ Martin Mellor. Tom Drake played some fantastic golf, getting an eagle on the 14th but, unfortunately, his score suffered on the par 3s.
The second of the nearest the pin competitions was on the challenging 17th hole. A long iron was required into the wind and the local knowledge of Greg Robertson was decisive. As the final group came down the last, the storm clouds were gathering and they rushed to get in before the rain began. Despite this, it still provided enough time for the second eagle of the day, with our co-founder, Stephen Foster, getting a 3 on the 18th.
As the scores were revealed, a strong finish by Martin Mellor saw him escalate to the top of the leaderboard, with a magnificent 41 points. This put Ryan Scott into second place with 38 points. An honourable mention goes to James Skirrow, who got 36 points, despite having to play off +3. Incredible golf!
