A new member shows everyone how the par 3’s should be played at Malton & Norton Golf Club
More amazing weather for Malton
Event Series #4: Malton & Norton Golf Club
More sun greeted us a for our visit to Malton but the beautiful backdrop had a kick, with a strong wind and fast greens making scoring very tough.
After devouring a colossal amount of sandwiches and chips everyone set off in determined mood.
The start at Malton is tough in a strong wind, with a long, dog-legged par 5 followed by a par 3 with a treacherous green. This backdrop provided the early drama for our first nearest the pin competition, with debutant, Tim Mercer, producing a magnificent shot to within 4 feet to announce his arrival to the Club!
The conditions were keeping the field compressed and the lead ebbed and flowed throughout the round. We got to the turn and over half the field were still well in contention, with Hamish McKenzie, Jamie Tinsley, Michael Goodare and Jamie Kelly the favourites.
As the battle continued, there was a glimmer of light left for those not in contention, with our second nearest the pin on the 13th. Once again, Tim Mercer demonstrated his short iron prowess and took his second prize of the day with an approach to around 8 feet.
Fellow debutants, Dale Cawley and Joshua Watson were quickly learning the competitive landscape of Clubhouse Leaders but came in with solid scoring. However, they were unable to challenge for the top spots. Going down the final stretch, just a couple of shots covered the top 5 spots. Michael Goodare was looking to continue his fine form with another win but was eventually pipped to first place by just one shot, with Jamie Kelly taking the prize on a solid 36 points.
Another fiercely fought tournament as the Members continue in the quest of the Race to Portugal.
