Diehard members brave the elements at Otley Golf Club
Event Series #4: Otley Golf Club
After two years of almost perfect weather for Clubhouse Leaders events, our luck finally ran out as members arrived at Otley Golf Club to face a day of relentless Yorkshire rain.
From the moment players pulled into the car park, it was clear this wasn't going to be a day for chasing personal bests. Instead, it would be a test of resilience, waterproofs and determination. As members tucked into their bacon sandwiches before teeing off, there was a real sense of trepidation about what lay ahead.
Despite the torrential conditions, Otley Golf Club held up remarkably well. The fairways remained playable, although the greens were a different story altogether, with standing water in places making distance control and putting pace incredibly difficult.
Some players adapted to the conditions better than others. Hamish McKenzie and Tobias Duczenko made flying starts and quickly established themselves at the top of the leaderboard while much of the field settled into survival mode, with bogey golf becoming the order of the day. Neil Herring, however, quietly went about his business, piecing together a solid and consistent round to keep himself firmly in contention.
The first nearest-the-pin competition arrived early in the round and was won by Charlie Langdale, continuing his impressive run of form. As the rain became heavier and clothes became wetter, scoring became increasingly difficult and players simply focused on grinding out every point they could.
By the halfway stage, it looked like a two-horse race between Hamish and Tobias, who had opened up a healthy advantage over the chasing pack.
Attention then turned to the second nearest-the-pin challenge on the 15th. Despite the conditions, several excellent shots found the green, but once again it was Charlie Langdale who came out on top, claiming his third consecutive nearest-the-pin prize – a remarkable achievement and one that is becoming something of a trademark.
As the final few holes approached, some understandably sought the sanctuary of the clubhouse and a warm drink, but the majority of the field dug deep and completed the round, embodying the spirit that makes Clubhouse Leaders events so special.
As scores were entered and stories of heroic recoveries, lost balls and soaked waterproofs filled the bar, one thing became clear – nobody was catching Hamish. An outstanding round of 35 points in truly miserable conditions saw him cruise to his maiden Clubhouse Leaders victory, finishing four points clear of the field.
Second place went to Neil Herring, who edged out Tobias on countback after both players posted excellent totals of 31 points.
Rain and golf are not always the perfect combination. But great company, plenty of laughs and sharing a well-earned drink afterwards with fellow members? That's exactly what Clubhouse Leaders is all about.
