Stunning views and a well maintained course at Silkstone Golf Club
Event Series #8: Silkstone Golf Club
Silkstone Golf Club was the venue for our eighth, and penultimate, event of the season. It was also, rather unbelievably, the eighth time we were playing in t-shirts! This season has seen incredible weather for every event, without a drop of rain from April to October.
Silkstone was a new course for Clubhouse Leaders and the interesting set up didn’t disappoint. Despite being relatively short it has a sting in the tail for those looking to take on the short par 4s and the sloping greens provided great protection.
Early scores were good with plenty of the field under par. Positive starts gave everyone confidence as they approach the 4th hole, a compact par 3, which was our first nearest the pin. The early groups put in some great markers but the ever reliable, Chris Hargreaves stole the glory with a great iron into 4 feet.
The middle holes at Silkstone started to take revenge and the scores began to tumble. In contrast, David Cusworth was continuing his fine form and took a healthy lead. A poor run at the start of the back nine brought him back into the pack, and we looked set for an exciting finish with Jamie Tinsley and Richard Storey joining David in the lead.
The 15th was the second of our nearest the pins and, at just 138 yards, it needed to be a close approach to take the prize. David Cusworth steadied the ship with a shot in to 2 foot. Despite missing the putt, it gave him the boost required and he once again pulled clear of the field.
This time, nobody was able to pull the lead back in and he ended with 39 points, 7 clear of the field. The fight for second place was close, with nobody looking like they wanted to win it. It finished with three ties on 32 points. Michael Goodare took second spot, with Jamie Tinsley third and Richard Storey fourth, all on a count back.
David’s win sets up a shoot out at our season finale at Moortown, with him and Michael going into the event with 2 wins under their belts. Who will be crowned the 2025 Clubhouse Leaders Champion and win the Race to Portugal?
