Dewsbury District Golf Club proved an interesting challenge for our third event
We are always looking to keep Clubhouse Leaders fresh and interesting for our members; introducing them to a couple of courses that they might not otherwise play. Our 3rd event of 2025 saw us take on the challenge of Dewsbury District Golf Club. The steep slopes and undulating fairways provide a unique test, and reward players with far reaching views of West Yorkshire as you climb upwards on the front nine.
The wind usually provides an added challenge, but we were fortunate to be greeted by fair weather, bouncy fairways and a calm day. The benign conditions meant that you could take full advantage of the par 5s, but some tricky bounces made some of the tighter par 4s very tough.
We had 18 members playing, with Clubhouse Leaders debuts for Neil Herring and Richard Storey. It wasn’t long before Neil made an impression, securing nearest the pin on the tricky 9th hole, putting his tee shot to within 10 foot of a tight flag.
Richard’s start was not quite as successful with no score on the first hole, but he gathered himself to recover fantastically well. The leaderboard was as tight as always, with the lead changing hands throughout the round.
Michael Goodare made a strong start but the field slowly reeled him back in. Charlie Langdale used his big hitting to demolish the par 5s on the back nine and put himself in prime position going down the straight. The closing holes at Dewsbury are tight and this saw Charlie drop shots, bringing the pack back into contention.
As the first group got to the 18th, par 3 specialist, Hamish McKenzie, produced a superb approach that wouldn’t be beaten, taking the second nearest the pin prize.
The sun soaked balcony began to fill up as we watched the drama of the final holes unfurl. It was down to four players to potentially take the title. Charlie’s dropped shots proved costly, finishing with 35 points in fourth spot. This left Neil, Richard and Michael fighting it out at the top, with just one shot eventually separating them.
Neil came in 3rd with 37 points after a brilliantly consistent round. Michael and Richard both scored 38 points with Michael winning his first event on a countback. Michael told us all how much it meant whilst we shared a drink on the balcony, this being his first ever golf competition win!
Another great competition with some excellent golf, with yet more business connections made. Exactly what Clubhouse Leaders is all about!
