Highest ever score for a Clubhouse Leaders event at an immaculate Garforth Golf Club
Garforth played host for the first time to Clubhouse Leaders for our sixth event of the season - and didn’t disappoint.
Another scorching day greeted us and we took full use of the lovely balcony to get some pre-round refreshments on board. With a summer of sun, the fairways were baked hard but the greens were as good as ever and it gave plenty of opportunity to score well.
With the current leader of the Order of Merit absent from the event, everyone was looking to gain ground in the table for the Race to Portugal.
First to make his move was David Cusworth, with a storming start that saw him four under after just three holes! The pack were worried and knew that it was going to prove difficult to drag him back in.
The first nearest the pin was on the tricky 7th hole; a tough green and pin position meant it wasn’t an easy take, but Chris Hughes rose to the occasion, knocking Hugh Spillane’s effort of the board to claim the first prize of the day.
As the round progressed it became clear that David Cusworth was hitting his best form of the season, with it starting to look like a stroll in the park. Despite the best efforts of Hamish McKenzie and Hugh Spillane, there was no eating into his significant lead.
With the event all but won, attention turned to the 16th to see who could get the second nearest the pin prize. An inviting hole that gives you a real chance, it was Jamie Tinsley who took full advantage with an impressive shot into around 6 foot.
As the round ended, the sun continued to shine and the balcony filled up to take advantage of the sun. With everyone finished, the drinks were flowing and a very happy David Cusworth celebrated a superb round with 45 points, and 10 points between him and second placed, Hamish McKenzie.
With Michael Goodare still holding the lead in the Order of Merit, there is plenty of work to do to catch him over the remaining three events.
