A gem of a course and a high scoring winner…

For the first time this season we were greeted by rain when we turned up to the grandeur of Woodsome Hall. As you drive through the grounds you can’t help but be impressed by the magnificence of the clubhouse – even in the drizzle!

As the members excitedly tucked into their breakfast we were delighted that as the first group teed off, the rain halted and it wasn’t long until the sun was at full strength. It’s pretty clear that 2025 Clubhouse Leaders events are meant to be sunshine fuelled!

With opportunities early on, the leaderboard quickly turned red. In fantastic conditions everyone seemed confident and it was a really tight battle. As we got to the first nearest the pin competition on the 7th hole the sun was hot and so was the golf. Some great shots were fired into the green, however Neil Herring produced a superb shot that took the honours.

Moving into the back nine there were still a number of contenders for the overall win, but the back nine saw the challengers drop away, while Michael Goodare continued his fine form.

The chasing pack needed to take chances and that led to drop shots. The 12th at Woodsome is a par 4 that gets the heart racing, with a steep climb to the green. The following walk to the 13th tee is all uphill, with a defibrillator at the top just in case!

Everyone took the chance to compose themselves for the second nearest the pin. Once again, each group were competitive, getting closer and closer. However the prize was taken by Mark Hinchliffe, as he hit a great iron to a couple of feet.

The rest of the round was a bit of a formality, as Michael stormed to 43 points, with James Pierechod finishing second with an excellent 37.

Eveyone basked in the sun and splendour of the courtyard and began plotting how they were going to catch Michael, who took a strong lead in the Order of Merit. We are sure there will be plenty more twists and turns on the Race to Portugal.
